Holy Guacamole!

Hola y feliz día de independencia!

Though we’re outside the US, we’ve still managed to have an awesome July 4th. Here’s a quick recap of the last 24 hours:

Yesterday evening after an afternoon of stand up paddle boarding, we had ourselves a guac-off. Four teams, a lot of avocados, and high levels of creativity all set the stage for an absolutely epic event. After the winning team had been chosen, we all kicked back and enjoyed the guacamole alongside homemade tacos, courtesy of the villa leaders.

Today we woke up early and set out for Playa Grande, a renowned surfing beach to the south of Playa Hermosa on the Pacific Ocean side of Costa Rica. Sunscreen was lathered, waves were caught, fun was had—simple enough. After a morning in the water, everybody was eager to eat so we headed to the Rip Jack Inn to fill up.

From Playa Grande, a beautiful bus ride through a mountainous valley brought us to the San Vicente de Nicoya Ecomuseo de Cerámica Chorotega, where we learned about the history of clay-based artisan work in Chorotega tradition. Our guide, Analucía, taught us about the prevalence of Chorotega culture in contemporary pueblo life. After our we got a demonstration about how to make ceramics. After the demonstration, we got to try for ourselves!

Finally, we arrived home to an All-American dinner over at Coco’s of burgers, both veggie and meat, and fries. It’s hard to believe, but tomorrow’s our last day of villa life! Stay tuned for updates on our whole group’s reunion near Lake Arenal.

Hasta Pronto,
